Quezon City Day.

Holiday for Q.C. peeps. Local holiday. No work-day. But not necessarily no work-load. Nevertheless, still fun to get a day free from teaching class. It gets tiring every once in a while. This Friday is memorial day for Ninoy Aquino, and it’ll be a national holiday.

Ahh, the wonders of heat! After 2 years of dining out (or a-la-plastic aristo-cart or carinderia-type food-whatchamacallit) I can finally opt to cook my own rice and boil my own eggs. May not mean much to other people, but I feel like a child amazed with a new toy.

Other heat by-products…
- toast
- coffee and hot coco!
- easy-bake thingies!

silverh is, at the moment, brainstorming with boss-man Ric regarding his tsunami paper. Glad to know boss-man finally found time for that.

After yesterday’s short-lived excitement for a possibly-new-found income, today comes another reality check. I’m barely halfway through with the boundary-layer paper. Finding out about Dr. M’s three-month-long Canada vacation is not reassuring either. Target date seems to keep being pushed and pushed…

…I fear to fall off the edge.

Skepticism

A job offer paying twice as much as you earn at present. Wouldn’t that be enough reason to pack your bags from your current job, and leave? One would normally run agog with such an opportunity. What is terribly wrong with a person who does otherwise?

Jessica Soho reports…

Joey de Leon does it so well. Insomnia led me to his recent gag show Nuts Entertainment, where Anjo Yllana, Janno Gibbs, Gelli de Belen, Carmina Villaroel, Amy Perez and Anne Curtis join him. I remember them launch this show months ago with a teaser “tuwing Wednesday ng gabi, bakit hindi?”, an obvious allusion to rival network’s habit of parallel scheduling of similar programs.

On rampant movie/audio piracy
Janno: Ma’am, DVD, DVD… DVD DVD…
Carmina: Ano bang pinagsasabi mo, bastos!!

On mass Chinovela hype
Joey, Anjo and Janno (sung to the tune of Sex Bomb’s i-spaghetti): Bakit tayong mga Pilipino, ‘pag may uso, nagkandarapa?
—-
On.. wala lang
Joey (as Doughnut): Patikim ng canton, ang kati! (Komentaro At Talakay Isyu)
Anjo (as Popsicle): Kumusta kayong lahat na miyembro ng mga TODA sa buong Pilipinas! PasPasTODA(Pasay at Pasig TODA) at TOTODA(Tondo TODA)!

Continuing insomnia allowed me to watch the GMA news magazine hosted by Jessica Soho, where she journals the incidence of immigration of Pinoys to far-off lands. Some notes taken from the show:

The international image of the Filipino:
- terrorista
- DH
- entertainer sa Japan
- bobo
- magnanakaw

Some Statistics Instructor Jorge might find useful:
- One out of five Filipinos say “Wala nang pag-asang umahon ang Pilipinas.”
- 2,300 Filipinos leave the country everyday, this figure increases 2% each year
- There are 7.5 million Filipino OFWs worldide to date, 2 million of which are of immigrant status
- There 400,000 Filipinos in Canada
- 200,000 Filipinos per year are given tourist visas to Canada, most of who have relatives in Canada

Tuluyan nang iniiwan ang bansang nabigo sa pagbigay ng kaginhawaang kanilang inasam.

Love of country. Shmoosh. I remember this to be listed in the conduct grading portion of my elementary and high school report card. I don’t remember getting a grade lower than A for it. All it meant to me at the time was “colonial mentality”. I don’t recall being told what it really meant to love one’s country.

Does any country deserve to be loved by its people? Who do you love when you love your country?
*the neighbors
*the congressmen
*the senators
*the President
*Filipino TV programming

Or:
*street children
*the urban poor
*the indigenous folk

More like:
*Boracay
*Anilao
*Tagaytay
*Baguio (err.. sometimes)

Number of Tourists in some Asia-Pacific countries (in millions)
*Malaysia - 13.2
*Thailand - 10.8
*Singapore - 7.5
*Indonesia - 4.9
*Philippines - 1.9

Wow, Philippines.

Idleness

Finally, one of those idle days. It’s the kind of day when one feels life is really worth living… doing absolutely nothing. Sort of. What is it they say? Oh yes, Idle hands are the devil’s best friend. Yo, *does a high five with the devil* what’s up, man?

Rubbish.

I should think that such days are what we work for. Aren’t there times when you think, “Hmm, how would I be when I retire?” and feel a warm breeze that makes you sleepy…

What would I give for a week of days as idle as today?

* a month’s worth of Kleenex
* my pearl earrings
* a week’s worth of lunches
* ahh, chastity? sure…
* make it a month’s worth of idle days and I’d loan my soul to El Diablo over here.

Officially my first LiveJournal entry

Brought to life a summary of my web. Hopefully this will help me navigate my pages better. Needs a lot of updating. Which reminds me, I still have to look for the notebook I lost. Not a very good opening entry for my livejournal. Anyhow, better one than none. I am stuck here at home with a very uncomfortable illness. Again, I will be a day late from work. I was hoping to be at the university today, of all days. Papa gave me some credit for internet, so at least that is a good thing. I should be able to catch up on sleep later.
