Cheers for knowing the difference between doing something slightly disobedient and being totally abominable. “Even the most moral people can do naughty things once in a while,” says Paul Gedo, Ph.D., a psychologist in Rockville, Maryland. “But you’re able to catch yourself quickly — you have enough perspective and self-control to know when you’re in balance and when you’re not.” For instance, you may be tempted to cheat or break an office policy, but you can delay gratification by realizing that there’s a good chance you’ll get screwed if you do. Instead, you satisfy unruly cravings by fantasizing, airing wicked thoughts to friends, or seeing someone else play the evil one. “We’re all fascinated by naughty people,” says Gedo, “but you’re better off watching them in a movie without playing that role yourself.”
